GANGTOK, August 2: The State fire and emergency service department today conducted a mock drill at Deorali Girls Senior Secondary school premises here at Gangtok with an aim to sensitize students on fire safety and disasters.
The students were told about protective actions to be adopted during fire and other disasters. Demonstrations were also given by the fire team from Gangtok under the guidance of Fire deputy chief officer Prakash Rai.
Rai said that the mock drill had been conducted to generate awareness among the students on fire safety and other disasters. We want the students to enhance their knowledge and skills so that they can effectively respond during the disasters, he said.
It is our priority to spread awareness among the students for responding to disasters, said Rai. He added that all schools should have their own fire and safety management plans so that it can respond swiftly in case of fire outbreak or in event of natural disasters.
The Deorali Girls senior secondary school has already set up its own disaster management team consisting of students as per the directions of the State human resource department. Ten schools in Sikkim have been selected by the department for setting up their disaster management teams.
